One Whole Year

Here we are at the end of a long road, from a half formed thought in my head twelve months ago until now. The Daily has grown, and shrunk, and grown again. I have become a better writer, a more discerning writer, and have grown to be happy with the format and how the Daily operates.

Every day brings something interesting in our world, and I think we now hold a fairly solid grip on the major stories unfolding around the world. The last year has certainly been filled with major stories: from the slow decline of ISIS, Europe's refugee crisis, through the ongoing saga of Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and so much more. I feel honoured to have served you over the last 52 weeks, and I hope to continue to serve a high quality product on a (mostly) daily basis.

Looking across the great expanse of the 300+ international editions, and the 250+ British editions we have put together, I feel like a great deal of work has passed me by, mostly to never be thought of again. For this reason there are two projects I hope to carry forward this year to provide a more permanent record of the Daily, at this moment in time.

The first is to chronicle the keys to our year as it passes us by, primarily in the form of additional content on this site providing coverage of the past. I have finished a short summary of our coverage from last February, and I hope to do something similar every month of the next year - looking back at the issues twelve months removed.

The second is to create long reads, here on the Daily site. I am often aware that every day we are sending eyes to other organisations, directing you to well-written work elsewhere. But I do often find myself searching for articles to articulate a particular point of view, or to provide a more detailed look at issues plaguing the world today. When I don't find something truly groundbreaking, you can tell. I don't recommend everything with the same level of enthusiasm and there is a very deliberate reason for that. I feel it is important that you trust what the Daily serves up for you, and if I wholeheartedly promise "the best expose of the year" every day, you will never believe me. I hold myself to this same standard, and I hope to start publishing infrequent long reads on this site. This will start with around one each month, but as with everything the Daily has done to this point, if there's a demand for more we'll endeavour to fill it.

These two projects are steps towards a dream I currently do not have the time to pursue, which is to complete a Your Tiny Daily Year In-Review book. Perhaps with enough readers, enough time, enough experience, this will be a dream eventually fulfilled.

We will continue to look back upon what we have achieved, but right now I look forward with hope, intrigued to see what the world serves us in the next year. And I hope you stick with us through it all.

For now, I want to simply thank you for reading.
